Fostering Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Entrepreneurship in Birbhum

As part of the RELY-LIFE project in Birbhum district, West Bengal—supported by the Ernst & Young Foundation—Sinchan Foundation organized two impactful Farmer Workshops (Krishi Melas) in Mohammad Bazar and Rampurhat-I blocks. These workshops served as vibrant platforms for building connections between government stakeholders and local farming communities.

The core objective was to bridge the gap between government schemes and rural beneficiaries, encouraging open dialogue where farmers could share challenges and collectively explore feasible solutions. With the active participation of government officials and banking partners, the Krishi Melas focused on promoting alternative and climate-resilient livelihood options.

Key highlights included in-depth discussions and demonstrations on sustainable farming practices such as maize, millets, pigeon pea cultivation, goat rearing, and backyard poultry. These practices are not only environmentally adaptive but also economically viable for small and marginal farmers.

A special feature of the events was the participation of Sinchan’s Young Entrepreneurs, who showcased integrated livestock models and organic agri-input solutions. Their innovations underscored the importance of youth-led initiatives in transforming rural agriculture and promoting circular economy practices.

Through these collaborative efforts, the RELY-LIFE project continues to pave the way for a more sustainable and inclusive rural livelihood ecosystem in Birbhum.
